Analogue studio tapes' archives conversion to DSD

At Music Heritage Lab we plan to digitise analogue tape archives of value to ultra-high-resolution DSD256 format. We have a once-only opportunity to do it and we have to do it now. These precious examples of our 20th-century culture – analogue music recordings – should not be left to simply vanish forever.

The digital sound recording and reproduction technology was introduced in the early eighties and has long replaced its predecessor – the analogue open-reel tape recorder – in studios all over the world. The reels of magnetic tape, especially final stereo masters, remain stored on shelves due to their unique value.

The majority of well-known analogue recordings have been transferred into PCM format for release on CD, but many other tapes remain unconverted. There is an important issue involved – the race against time itself.

Magnetic tapes are prone to deterioration even if they are stored in cool places with adequate humidity levels. Tapes suffer from audible print-through effect while their base film becomes brittle with age.

There is also a lot to be gained by doing the work again since DSD audio quality is close to pure analogue sound which allows creating a perfect copy of the original as technical specifications of DSD recorders exceed that of best studio reel-to-reel tape machines.

HIGH-RESolution TRIBUTES TO MUSIC LEGENDS

In order to promote advantages of high-resolution music, we are planning a number music projects that will be recorded in ultra high-resolution DSD256 format.

The work of important artists of the past will be introduced to modern music listeners through a series of ‘live in the studio’ tribute albums to legends of music like Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Prince, Johny Cash, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Django Reinhardt, Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald and many others.

These projects have advanced artistic and commercial elements in equal measure supported by purity of concept and simplicity of execution. This intended marriage of technical perfection and artistic excellence has few parallels in the history of modern music. The importance of these projects for music fans everywhere will be obvious and no doubt appreciated.

HI-EVOLUTION MUSIC THERAPY & MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Hi-Evolution – a social project that aims to help disabled and less privileged people to explore their talents and take control of their lives with a help of music.

Music Heritage Lab is planning to run regular music therapy campaigns to support recovering patients, children with special needs and/or disabilities.

We want to give a boost to music education for less privileged children across the globe. We want to encourage them to rise above the circumstances, explore their talents and change their lives forever through the music. We hope to see them becoming professional performers and musicians. We will support talented young musicians through their studies, releasing and promoting their albums to help them make their dreams come true.
